The Man Who Lives With the King Crosses 10 Million Viewers, Becoming Korea's 34th Film to Reach the Milestone
The historical drama about King Danjong's exile is the first film to hit 10 million since 2024, sparking hopes for a Korean cinema revival

South Korean cinema has reached a landmark moment as The Man Who Lives With the King officially crossed the 10 million viewer mark on March 6, making it the 34th domestically released film and the 25th Korean-produced film to achieve this coveted milestone. The historical drama accomplished this feat in just 31 days after its February 4 premiere, delivering a much-needed boost to an industry that has struggled with declining attendance in recent years.
A Two-Year Wait Ends
Distributor Showbox confirmed that the film surpassed 10 million cumulative viewers as of 6:30 PM on March 6. This marks the first time a film has reached the 10 million threshold since 2024, when both Exhuma and Crime City 4 achieved the distinction. Notably, 2025 saw no 10 million-viewer films at all, with the year's top performer being Disney's animated sequel Zootopia 2 at 7.7 million viewers. That drought was the first since 2011, excluding the COVID-19 pandemic years of 2020-2021.
The film's journey to 10 million was propelled by powerful word-of-mouth during the Lunar New Year holiday. Weekly Friday attendance figures tell a compelling story of accelerating momentum. From 126,000 in its first week to 133,000 in its second, the numbers then surged dramatically to 264,000 in week three and 278,000 in week four as positive reviews spread among audiences.
A Warm Take on a Tragic King
Directed by Jang Hang-jun, The Man Who Lives With the King reimagines the final months of the deposed King Danjong through a tender and humanistic lens. Veteran actor Yoo Hae-jin delivers a standout performance alongside Park Ji-hoon, who portrays the young king during his exile in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province. Rather than focusing solely on political intrigue, the film explores the connections Danjong forms with the villagers of Gwangcheon-gol, offering audiences a touching narrative about finding warmth and community during the darkest of times.
The film joins an elite group of historical dramas to reach 10 million viewers in South Korean cinema history, becoming only the fourth to do so after The King and the Clown in 2005, Masquerade in 2012, and the record-setting Roaring Currents in 2014.
A Lifeline for Korean Theaters
The blockbuster success has had a measurable ripple effect across the entire Korean box office. Total theater attendance for January and February 2026 reached 20.45 million, representing a 42.2 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Korean films accounted for 74.8 percent of that total at 15.29 million viewers. During the Lunar New Year holiday period from February 14-18, daily average attendance hit 845,000, a 58.3 percent jump from the previous year's holiday figures.
Industry executives have taken note. Hwang Jae-hyun, CGV's head of strategic support, acknowledged that while this single hit cannot solve all the challenges facing theaters, it has demonstrated that cinema-going retains a unique competitive edge over streaming platforms when compelling content is available.
Challenges Remain Despite the Euphoria
Despite the celebratory mood, industry analysts caution that structural challenges persist. The five major Korean distributors, including CJ ENM, Lotte Entertainment, NEW, Showbox, and Plus M Entertainment, have only 22 Korean commercial films planned for release in 2026. That figure represents roughly half of the approximately 40 films that were typical in the pre-COVID era, meaning the supply of potential blockbusters remains constrained.
Film market analyst Kim Hyung-ho offered a balanced perspective, noting that while the film has confirmed that audiences still find movie theaters an attractive destination, the supply side remains challenging. However, he expressed optimism that this success could help open the floodgates for renewed investment in Korean film production, potentially kickstarting a virtuous cycle of funding and creation.
